Reading Out of Poverty Inc – Literacy Recovery Project
Due to the pandemic, there has been a major spike of early reading development problems, with children from low-income homes. Many have stalled in their literacy skills widening the literacy gap between children from low socio-economic backgrounds and their wealthier peers. Decades of early childhood research studies demonstrate that children with access to high quality early childhood development, are more prepared for kindergarten and do better in school.
Reading Out Of Poverty is a ROOP) is a literacy recovery project which will enhance literacy skills amongst some of our state’s most vulnerable children.
The grant will be used to fund:
•1,500 literacy packs (including bilingual books, height charts, information pamphlets, magnets, posters and tote bag).
•Pop Up Libraries, materials and resources.
•Children’s books.
•Travel/transport.
•Project management.
•Marketing and promotion.
•Evaluation.
The grant money will enable ROOP to reach 1,500 children aged (0-5) and their families by providing them with a literacy pack which includes tools and resources to engage their children in reading and fund the set up and maintenance of three Pop-Up libraries in the Corio, Whittington and Norlane postcodes.
ROOP will target specific areas within the City of Greater Geelong where there is clear evidence that children are falling behind.
Ownership of books encourages reading and equips children with vital school readiness skills. Without this effective intervention, these children face a lifelong battle with illiteracy which is often linked to poverty and poor social and economic outcomes in their adult life.
