Surfing Victoria – Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program

In October/November/December 2022, Benefit Geelong’s sponsorship of the Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program helped provide equipment and support for a 5-week (ongoing) Ocean Skill Development Program with the Indigenous communities of Greater Geelong and district.

This multi-week program definitely experienced some wild and wooly days at the beach across this time, with 53 participants, aged from as young as six years old, up to 25 years old taking part.

Sponsorship amount: $10,000

The Victorian Indigenous Surfing Program is one of the longest running Indigenous engagement programs in the country. Surfing Victoria strives to be a leader in Indigenous sport and participation while fostering a love and understanding of waterways.

The Indigenous Surfing Program aims to enrich Indigenous communities across our state through surfing and stand up paddleboarding; being physically active in a safe, fun environment, whilst building confidence, social cohesion and connection to community whilst reducing barriers to participation. Linking the imperative lifelong skills of water safety and physical activity with opportunities for young people to connect with others and local mentors plants the seed of a lifestyle that is connected, active, happy and healthy.
